A closer look at MCT oil and the benefits of consuming it

Benefits of MCT oil

The keto diet is starting to grow in popularity around the world. It is being used for weight loss and as an overall lifestyle change. So far research is showing some seriously awesome benefits to the diet for people trying to maintain a healthy weight. One of the most important parts of a successful ketogenic diet is the consumption of healthy fats. A popular way to do this is by consuming medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). But what the heck is a medium-chain triglyceride? And, what are the benefits of MCT oil?

According to a researcher with Healthline, “medium-chain triglycerides are types of fatty acids containing caproic acid (C6), caprylic acid (C8), capric acid (C10), and lauric acid (C12)” (Brown Ph.D. RD, 2016). Due to a shorter length, MCT’s can be rapidly absorbed into your body, which in turn makes them a great source of energy and given less of a chance to be stored as fat. MCT’s are found in coconut oil, palm kernel oil (#savetheorangutans), and dairy products although the composition of the MCT’s in each varies significantly.

So I can get MCT’s other products, why would I need MCT oil itself?

It all depends on your personal goals. If you are looking to get larger concentrations of important fatty acids like C8 and C10, MCT oil is a great way to go. Caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid are known to be more rapidly absorbed than let's say lauric acid (C12). Don’t get me wrong, if you are looking to up your intake of MCT’s feel free to consume coconut oil and dairy products they are great sources of the fatty acids. The only difference is simply that MCT oil has a higher concentration of the faster absorbing acids.

Some benefits of including MCT oil in your diet include

  • Increased fullness
  • Less likely to be stored as fat
  • Could increase your bodies ability to burn fat
  • Potentially helps increase production of ketones in a low carb or keto diets

Where do I get it?

You can find MCT oil in many different food and beverage products. The lack of poor taste makes its a great addition to your keto and low carb meals. We just recently started working on a keto ice cream that contains MCT oil sources 100% from coconuts. It is a wonderful addition to your diet and does a great job of filling that sweet tooth during the week without knocking you out of ketosis.
